Stoneware bowl finished in the highly reflective Light through Dark Water glaze.

Light through Dark Water: A reflective, high-gloss, tenmoku-inspired wood ash glaze with qualities that become apparent in the light: a break on the rim to a warm russet brown, a vibrant and glowing contrast between the golden brushstroke and the deep brown surface. When I set out to develop this glaze, I had memories of light filtering through to depths of water that are usually unseen in mind. The quality when the bottoms of lochs, lakes, and rivers are dark and hidden - hidden because of the darkness of the iron-rich stones that line them or from the peat-stained quality of the water itself. Light filters through the clear water, dances and ripples, and makes the depth visible.

Please note that I have been developing different qualities of this glaze based on variations in glaze hydration and the degree of heat-work in the kiln. A slightly hotter kiln has given this batch a beautiful, rich gradient from a glowing russet brown on the rim that flows down the form to a deep, dark brown. The subtle blue fleck seen in previous batches is minimal/not present and this has allowed for a more vibrant, glassier contrast between light and dark aspects of the glaze.
